Do you need a toner?

Question: “Ramla, do I really need a toner?”

I get asked this question all👏🏾 the👏🏾TIME👏🏾, and it is a great question!

Answer: Toner is a superpower skincare product!!

I have a client with aging skin (actually all of my clients have aging skin). This client wants to have a youthful glow, tightened skin and needs a couple of pores that have been enlarged extracted. Just so you know, enlarged pores come from dirt, oil and whatever else settling into the pore, over time that gunk if it’s not property extracted it will cause the pore to expand. She’s committed to facials now and wants prolonged facial results. When discussing products she straight out told me, “I’ve been using witch hazel and I think it works just fine.” She’s not the only client that has pointed this out to me. I’ve even had a comment on social media boasting alcohol use post cleanse 😒. I won’t address alcohol use right now but you will understand why it doesn’t provide the magic your skin needs as you continue reading.

Can you use witch hazel?

You can, but is it the best thing for your skin as a stand alone ingredient? A lot of toners have witch hazel as a top ingredient. Witch hazel is an astringent that removes cleanser, makeup and/or oil that didn’t come off during your cleanse. Note, your skin is maturing and with aging skin it loses its moisture, elasticity and hydration daily. What you put on your skin matters even more at your age. Do you see where I’m going with this? Yesterday’s price is not today’s price…or something like that. What you did to your skin in your 20’s and 30’s is not working for you in your 40’s, 50’s and beyond. It’s best to address it now before you start looking your age.

I tell my sons, if you take it out, put it back where you found it. Apply that to your skin (see what I did there?). If you are removing moisture and hydration, you want to put the nutrients back. Toner enters the chat 😏.

Here are three (3) ways a toner can help you slow down your aging skin (without getting to science-y):

  • An added boost after cleansing and enhanced makeup remover. Wipe face (post-cleanse) with a(toner) saturated cotton round.

  • Controls oil production, decongests the skin and purifies the pores. Wipe face (post-cleanse) with a (toner) saturated cotton round.

  • Added hydration to your skin. Mist toner over face, neck, and décolleté, then gently press into the skin.

*Pro Tip a spritz of toner - after makeup application - brightens the skin and gives a dewy airbrush finish.

Here’s more evidence you need a toner:

When choosing a toner some factors you want to take into consideration. It adds moisture to your skin (witch hazel we already talked about taking moisture from your skin). It has antioxidant properties that help keep your skin protected and youthful. A regulation of sebum (oil) which is great for this summer heat that’s about to pull up! If you’re in NY you already know. A toner that helps to hydrate the skin is a powerhouse! At this age, hydration is key if you’re looking for a youthful glow. Look for protection that soothes and calms the skin’s barrier is key. All toners are not created equal so remember, having a toner that is right for your skin is like finding the perfect pair of shoes that you can walk in all day/night and you get tons of compliments. It’s a win-win!
